Russia to drop out of International Space Station after 2024

Russia will pull out of the International Space Station after 2024 and focus on building its own orbiting outpost, the country’s new space chief said. The announcement, while not unexpected, throws into question the future of the 24-year-old space station, with experts saying it would be extremely difficult—perhaps a “nightmare,” by one reckoning—to keep it running without the Russians. NASA and its partners had hoped to continue operating it until 2030. “The decision to lee the station after 2024 has been made,” Yuri Borisov, appointed this month to lead the Russian space agency, Roscosmos, said during a meeting with President Vladimir Putin. He added: “I think that by that time we will start forming a Russian orbiting station.” The space station has long been a symbol of post-Cold War international teamwork in the name of science but is now one of the last areas of cooperation between the U.S. and the Kremlin. Man cured of HIV, cancer following breakthrough stem cell transplant

A 66-year-old man who was diagnosed with HIV in 1988 is said to be free of both the HIV virus and cancer, following a stem cell transplant from an unrelated donor for leukemia①. The patient was treated at City of Hope, one of the largest cancer research and treatment organizations in the U.S. and one of the leading research centers for diabetes and other life-threatening illnesses, the organization said. The City of Hope patient is reportedly the fourth patient in the world and the oldest to go into long-term remission②of HIV without antiretroviral therapy (ART) for over a year after receiving stem cells from a donor with a rare genetic mutation. While the announcement provides hope for millions living with HIV, medical experts he cautioned that a procedure like this is not a viable cure for the virus. (ABC)

Sprite will no longer be sold in green bottles

Sprite is retiring its green plastic bottles after more than 60 years. Coca-Cola said it’s changing the packaging from green to clear plastic beginning August 1 as part of broader efforts to become more environmentally responsible. Sprite’s current plastic contains green polyethylene terephthalate (PET), an additive that can’t be recycled into new bottles, a key initiative for the company as it looks①to reduce plastic waste. Customers will also notice a revamped②logo and packaging design on the Sprite bottles that aims to provide a more “consistent look and voice around the world,” the company said. The well-known green hue will still be used on Sprite labels. (CNN)
